In her text “Subjects of Sex/Gender/Desire” in Gender Trouble, Judith Butler expands the feminist gender and gender divide. Butler discusses the constraints placed on identity politics by assuming a certain continuity between sex, gender, and desire. For her, there is no distinction between sex and gender, because both are gendered categories of discourses produced on “natural gender” through gender.
Ünal Bostancı uses symbols assigned to gender identity and orientation categories in his work “GYGY” (Stars Wandering Alone in the Sky). These symbols are astrological symbols that come from Ancient Rome and symbolize genders. Today, these symbols become a means of self-identification by diversifying with different combinations over the representations of Male (Mars symbol with an arrow at the end) and Woman (Venus symbol with a plus at the end). Bostancı creates an integration of many signs and presents a sky map in the light of symbols.

Butler, cinsiyet, toplumsal cinsiyet ve arzu arasında belirli bir süreklilik varsaymanın kimlik politikalarına getirdiği kısıtlamaları tartışır. Ona göre cinsiyet ve toplumsal cinsiyet arasında bir ayrım yoktur, çünkü her ikisi de toplumsal cinsiyet aracılığıyla “doğal cinsiyet” üzerine üretilen söylemlerin toplumsal cinsiyete dayalı kategorilerdir.
Ünal Bostancı “GYGY” (Gökyüzünde Yalnız Gezen Yıldızlar) adlı işinde cinsel kimlik ve yönelim kategorilerine atanan sembolleri kullanır. Bu semboller, Antik Roma’dan günümüze kadar gelen ve cinsiyetleri sembolize eden astrolojik simgelerdir. Günümüzde, Erkek (ucunda ok bulunan Mars simgesi) ve Kadın (ucunda artı bulunan Venüs simgesi) temsiliyetleri üzerinden farklı kombinasyonlarla bu semboller çeşitlenerek bireylerin kendilerini tanımlama aracına dönüşür. Bostancı, çok sayıdaki işaretten bir entegrasyon oluşturarak sembollerin ışığında bir gökyüzü haritası sunuyor.
